You are likely reading this because you have indicated to Kelly, Bart, or Katie that you are interested in being an official HATLab member. Anyone is welcome to attend or observe HATLab meetings without becoming a member. Unlike a visitor or observer, a HATLab member is someone who commits to attending regularly and contributing to HATLab meetings, participating in relevant research projects, and signing up for the HATLab Seminar credit (or research hours with Kelly, Bart, or Katie) each semester.

Each semester, you have the opportunity to register for the HATLab Seminar (HCC 9500). You can sign up for this credit as many times as you wish. Students engaging in research under Dr. Caine’s, Dr. Bart’s, or Dr. Park’s supervision (e.g., as part of a thesis, dissertation, or funded position) should sign up every semester. All other HATLab members are encouraged to register for the credit each semester, but it is not required. If you are curious about doing research in the area of Human-Computer Interaction (and particularly in the areas that Dr. Caine, Dr. Bart, and Dr. Park), the HATLab Seminar is a great first step in that direction. Please check out our latest publications to see if this applies to you:
Dr. Kelly Caine
Dr. Bart Knijnenburg
Dr. Katie Park

The purpose of the credit is to signal a commitment to spend at least 3 hours each week on general research activities related to HATLab. These activities include regularly attending and contributing to the weekly HATLab meeting, signing up for a HATLab key task for that semester, providing feedback to other HATLab members, participating in HATLab review rotations for conferences, and helping other lab members, in general. The work you do for the HATLab Seminar credit would be on top of the work you do for other research credits. If you decide not to sign up for the HATLab credit hour but want the benefits the lab provides, please still plan to spend some time each week helping out with lab tasks and helping other lab members. Being part of the HATlab comes with benefits and responsibilities.

To sign up for the HATLab Seminar credit, register for the course labeled “HCC 9500 – HATLab Seminar” when you register for your regular courses for an upcoming semester. If you are a CS undergraduate student, register for the course labeled “CPSC 2810 – HATLab Seminar” when you register for your regular courses for an upcoming semester. You will likely get a message that says “See instructor for consent” when you register. Once you’ve registered, send Dr. Bart an email notifying him of your registration request and provide your student ID (C-number), so he can process the request.

See our HATLab Handbook for more details.
